estoniaEstonia is officially the Republic of Estonia. I don’t think even Estonians refer to their country by it’s official name, but it must be important. If it wasn’t important, why have an official name? Anyway, the Republic of Estonia will always be referred to as Estonia here.

Estonia is a state in the Baltic region, which is the region in Northern Europe around the Baltic Sea. Estonia is bordered by water to the north and west. In the north by the Gulf of Finland and to the west by the Baltic Sea. Latvia borders Estonia to the south, and to the east Lake Peipus and Russia form the border.

Estonia’s 1,311,870 people live on the country’s 45,227 km2 land mass. Those people are Finnic and speak Estonian, which is a Finno-Ugric language closely related to Finnish, and distantly to Hungarian and Sami languages. Having a population of just over 1.3 million makes Estonia one of the least populous of the European Union member states.

Estonia is divided into fifteen counties, with the city of Tallinn being the national capital. it is also the largest city in the country. Tallinn is also Estonia’s gateway to the world, having the country’s largest airport and harbour, both of which welcome thousands of tourist each year.
