Barbados is a sovereign island nation in the Lesser Antilles, in the western area of the North Atlantic. It is 100 kilometers (62 mi) east of the Windward Islands and the Caribbean Sea, about 168 km (104 mi) east of the islands of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and 400 km (250 mi) north-east of Trinidad and Tobago. This puts Barbados outside of the normal Atlantic hurricane belt.
Barbados is a popular tourist destination even though it is only 34 kilometers (21 miles) in length and up to 23 kilometers (14 mi) wide, and covers an area of just 432 square kilometers (167 sq mi).
Tourism is central to the Barbados economy and directly employs 14,000 people. Barbados welcomes approximately 1 million visitors a year. This means the tiny nation has the 9th most visitor arrivals in the region. Tourism generates over 50% of the country’s foreign exchange.
