Afghanistan is officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. It’s a landlocked country located within South Asia and Central Asia and has a population of approximately 32 million, making it the 42nd most populous country in the world.
Afghanistan’s current political unrest, following on the heels of the Russian and then USA invasions, is nothing new to Afghans. Unrest began in the 18th century with the Hotak and Durrani dynasties, and then late in the 19th century Afghanistan became a buffer state in the conflict between British India and the Russian Empire. King Amanullah unsuccessfully attempted to modernize the Afghanistan after the Third Anglo-Afghan War of 1919.
Unrest aside, Afghanistan’s tourism has survived, but at a fraction of what it once was. Tourist visiting Afghanistan today are adventurous, or are members of humanitarian missions. Both adventurers and humanitarians are still able to find decent hotel accommodations and meals, mostly in Kabul, the capital, and major urban centers.
Visitors to Afghanistan may find it difficult to book hotel accommodations through any online booking service. It’s recommended that inquiries about availability be made directly with hotels, or contact Vagabond Travel for assistance.
